Our BEng Electronic Engineering covers a variety of topics within the area of modern electronic engineering. We emphasise electronic systems rather than electronic devices, and particularly aim at those who wish to become electronic systems designers rather than specialists in semiconductors and semiconductor devices. We include the study of computer software and processors, as well as traditional topics such as circuit design (analogue and digital), audio and video, signal processing and data communications. In your third year you spend the whole year on placement in the UK or abroad. You secure your placement with support and guidance from the University. All students taking our BEng courses can apply to be student members of the Institution of Electrical Engineers. If you join as a student member you will be automatically transferred to the class of Member of the IET (MIEE) when you graduate. After some further study (for example an MSc) and a number of years in a responsible position (meaning you will typically be in your early thirties), you can apply to be become a Chartered Engineer.

Our courses help you develop the graduate capabilities that employers value. You learn to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. You develop strong analytical, numerical and ICT skills, learn to work as part of a team and on your own, and know how to manage your time effectively and meet deadlines. You develop your critical thinking abilities, and become more adaptable and agile in your thinking. We stimulate your imagination through coursework and project work, while specialist modules enable you to acquire all the technical knowledge and skills needed to have a positive influence on society as a professional twenty-first century engineer. Your third year spent on placement also adds significantly to your profile as you will have secured a placement in a competitive market, completed the placement, and reflected on your experience. In addition, our BEng Electronic Engineering is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). Our graduates are equipped to work at a professional level in electronics and telecommunications, often in design engineering but also in other professional areas such as production management. Our graduates are also highly sought after outside the field of electronics because of their high-level mathematical skills. Recent graduates of our BEng Electronic Engineering are now employed as an embedded software engineering with the Mclaren Formula One team, as an embedded systems engineer at B&W Group and as an inside sales engineering and team leader at National Instruments. Other graduates of our School have progressed to senior positions, both in industry and academia. Companies and organisations where our former students are now employed include: BT, IBM, National Instruments, Delta Tau, RBC Capital Markets, Itron, Visa, Force India F1, Google, AWS, Jobserve and Danwood.
