Our BEng Electronic Engineering covers a variety of topics within the area of modern electronic engineering. We emphasise electronic systems rather than electronic devices, and particularly aim at those who wish to become electronic systems designers rather than specialists in semiconductors and semiconductor devices. We include the study of computer software and processors, as well as traditional topics such as circuit design (analogue and digital), audio and video, signal processing and data communications. All students taking our BEng courses can apply to be student members of the Institution of Electrical Engineers. If you join as a student member you will be automatically transferred to the class of Member of the IET (MIEE) when you graduate. After some further study (for example an MSc) and a number of years in a responsible position (meaning you will typically be in your early thirties), you can apply to be become a Chartered Engineer.

Demand for electronics and telecommunications engineers is high; the IT and engineering sectors are growing at a rate that outstrips the supply of fresh talent. The profession offers a range of careers from design and development to marketing, management, production engineering and applications engineering. Graduates also find employment in other disciplines because of the highly numerate nature of the subject. Our department has a large pool of external contacts, ranging from companies providing robots for the media industry, through vehicle diagnostics, to electronic system design and circuit design and manufacture, who work with us and our students to provide advice, placements and eventually graduate opportunities. Our recent graduates have gone on to work for a wide range of high-profile companies including: National Instruments Circad Design Ltd The McClaren Formula One Team B&W Group BT IBM Visa Google We also work with the university’s Employability and Careers Centre to help you find out about further work experience, internships, placements, and voluntary opportunities. Our graduates are equipped to work at a professional level in electronics and telecommunications, often in design engineering but also in other professional areas such as production management. Our graduates are also highly sought after outside the field of electronics because of their high-level mathematical skills. Recent graduates of our BEng Electronic Engineering are now employed as an embedded software engineering with the McClaren Formula One team, as an embedded systems engineer at B&W Group and as an inside sales engineering and team leader at National Instruments. Other graduates of our School have progressed to senior positions, both in industry and academia. Companies and organisations where our former students are now employed include: BT, IBM, National Instruments, Delta Tau, RBC Capital Markets, Itron, Visa, Force India F1, Google, AWS, Jobserve and Danwood.
