Clinical Laboratory Science provides a foundation for a career in medical diagnosis or other health-related fields. The major builds on a general introduction to human biology, cell biology and human molecular genetics to cover a range of clinical laboratory disciplines including haematology, immunology, histopathology and molecular pathology. Students will obtain a broad knowledge of disease processes as well as technical skills in the handling of patient material, clinical testing and the analysis and troubleshooting of results. The major provides extensive exposure to the underlying principles involved in the measurement of clinical parameters. Subject to academic performance requirements, students completing Clinical Laboratory Science as a double major with either Biomedical Science, Molecular Biology or Forensic Biology and Toxicology, can gain entry into a fourth year of study incorporating clinical practicum experiences leading to a full qualification in Laboratory Medicine. Clinical Laboratory Science is also excellent preparation for postgraduate studies in the health and medical fields, such as Medicine or Pharmacy.
