Course Description

BA Theatre Arts examines theatre as a contemporary, dynamic form. The degree develops you as a creative, flexible and critical practitioner, preparing you to pursue a wide range of theatre-related careers. On this practice-focused course you will explore performance, direction, design and technical theatre in a challenging and supportive environment, and have the opportunity to specialise in your particular area of interest after your first year. Middlesex University has a long tradition of innovation in the teaching of theatre as a collaborative and collective art. You will benefit from engaging in all areas of theatre arts, including performance, design, technology, direction, written analysis and critical thinking. Our course has a strong focus on practical work and there are a wide range of production and performance opportunities from your first year onwards. We are committed to producing creative, thoughtful and independent graduates who can work in, with, and through theatre. All students who are accepted to study Theatre Arts are enrolled in their first year on the BA Theatre Arts degree. At the end of the first year you will have the opportunity to continue on this award or follow one of the specialist pathways below: BA Theatre Arts (Performance) offers you the opportunity to explore and apply performance processes with an emphasis on physical methodologies and collaborative creation, including interpretation of existing texts. BA Theatre Arts (Solo Performance), by contrast, will appeal to you if you have a strong interest in performance traditions outside the mainstream, with the performer as a key originator, rather than interpreter, of the material performed. BA Theatre Arts (Theatre Directing) puts the focus on the practices and aesthetics of theatre directing with an emphasis on the director as collaborator with performer and designer. Theatre Arts (Design and Technical Theatre) enables you to develop approaches to scenographic, visual, aural and technical design for theatre.
