Course Description

The role of the sports coach is diverse, working with everyone from elite sportspeople and teams to young people and community groups. You will support athletes at all levels of fitness to develop physical and mental stamina and reach their peak potential. We are one of the UK's leading universities for sports education. Our cutting-edge degree allows you to explore the full potential of sport and exercise science while focusing on teaching and coaching through a focused module. You will learn how to confidently develop an individual's physical and psychological fitness to maximise their performance and become adept at confidently planning and preparing physical education and coaching sessions in line with national standards. We produce self-disciplined, professional sports science graduates who perform at the highest level (including competing and winning medals at the London Olympics 2012). Like all of our sports pathways, you can either apply directly to this course or to the general BSc Sport and Exercise Science programme and choose your specialism at the end of year two.

Career outcomes

While this is the ideal degree for those wanting to work as sports coaches or teachers, the full spectrum of sports science careers will be open to you, including: health and fitness club management, fitness consultancy, weight management, health promotion, personal fitness training, corporate health advice, sports or physical activity development, medical sales, and the armed forces. There are career opportunities in teaching and research. Successful graduates also have an enhanced opportunity to gain a place on our highly competitive PGCE programme. Upon graduation, students can continue with their professional studies taking British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES) training programmes to qualify in three years as an accredited sports and exercise scientist. Suitable graduates can also study to become physiotherapists or sports rehabilitators. Our BSc Sport & Exercise Science (Teaching & Coaching) graduates have gone on to work in a wide range of roles in organisations including: Teaching Personnel, Middlesex University, London Metropolitan University, Twyford CofE School, Nightingale Academy, Lee Valley School, Box Clubber, and Willesden Sports Centre. In roles such as: Graduate Teaching Assistant, Tutor, PE Teacher, Supply Teacher, School Games Organiser, Manager, Sports Coach and Fitness Instructor. 100% of our Sport and Exercise Science graduates are now in professional careers (Unistats)
