Growing world markets, the internationalization of many companies, and rapid changes in technology all create a considerable need for those who can effectively understand and interact with people from other cultures. From beginning French to French studies in France, the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures offers a French major that builds proficiency in the five areas necessary for communication: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and cultural competence. It also strengthens students' understanding of the literature, history, customs, and culture of the people who use the language and improves their employment opportunities in a global society. A major in French consists of 32 hours, with a minimum of 18 hours in courses numbered 300 or above. In all Foreign Languages and Literatures majors and minors, some lower-division requirements may be exempted as a result of examination or evidence of prior training or experience.
