BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering

Course Description

Become a Chartered Engineer and have an impact on the design, construction and maintenance of the world around you. Whether you're fresh out of college or sixth form, or already working in industry, our course will give you the skills to pursue a successful career in which ever area of engineering you choose to specialise. Mathematics will play a key role in your learning experience - you'll study how to apply the maths which will underpin everything you do in engineering. We'll build your understanding of structures, transport, hydraulics, highways, water supply, flood control, planning, geotechnics, surveying, materials science and sustainability of structures. We'll also nurture your ability to manage, work in team environments and play a leading role in this industry. You'll develop a flair for communication, problem solving and project management, knowing what's needed to investigate and evaluate different engineering situations. You'll also look at using materials in new ways, the principles of experimental design, and the engineering behind roads, bridges and other major structures. You'll understand how civil engineering works and know how to use this knowledge to solve structural problems.

Career outcomes

We expect many students to move onto a masters degree before gaining hands-on experience and pursuing Chartered Engineer status. If you decide to continue on your path to chartered status, once achieved, your salary and levels of responsibility will be greatly enhanced - from the design of buildings and roads to hospitals or any other infrastructure, working at home or abroad, office based or on-site - you will be able to lead design teams on innovative projects focusing on any aspect of engineering you choose.
