This programme aims to graduate expressive and imaginative dancers who can confidently fulfil the dance demands made of them in local and regional dance companies, dance events, and in musical theatre companies. Upon graduation, you should be qualified to dance with contemporary dance companies, on television, in corporate/commercial performance events, and large-scale cultural celebrations.
Through workshops, master-classes and guest artists you will learn dance techniques and expressions in a wide range of styles, periods and genres. Body conditioning classes and Asian Martial Arts also contribute to the movement range and vocabulary. Contextual studies support the necessary understanding of distinct stylistic features, supplementing dance practice, and dance skills. You will be trained to become versatile and flexible dancers, at ease with multiple choreographic requirements in a demanding professional environment.
While Contemporary dance is the backbone of the programme, technical training is achieved through a combination of daily classes in four main genres. These are Urban Dance, Jazz, Ballet, and Contemporary Dance. These technical skills are further complemented with classes to enhance performance and awareness. These include physical theatre, improvisation and contact improvisation. Employability is further improved through modules that help you to understand career paths and options, audition techniques, and employment contracts.
Music training will enhance your knowledge of style, rhythm, and cultural sources. Cross-disciplinary collaborations on projects with Acting, Film, and Technical and Production Management students broaden your creative and choreographic perspective and enhance your understanding of the current arts scene.
The Diploma provides professional engagement and training in a range of on-stage, management, and behind-the-scenes positions, equipping you with a solid foundation to become a performer and for future specialisations in choreography, education and management.
