Few things are as rewarding as giving someone the ability to walk, stand or even just pick up a cup. Studying clinical prosthetics and orthotics gives you the ability to do just that. You'll learn about artificial limbs (prostheses) for people with amputations, and supportive devices (orthoses) for people with musculoskeletal weakness. This course offers practical experience, and is the only course of its kind in the Asia-Pacific region. Your clinical experience starts in first year with a half-day observational placement. In second and third years you'll work with volunteer clients. In fourth year you'll do two clinical placements (12 or 16 weeks) at a leading Australian or international hospital or private practice. During this time you'll gain experience with tasks including assisting in providing prosthetic and orthotic treatment while working directly with clients. This clinical discipline requires students to be hands-on. That's why we have clinical workshops allowing you to experiment with materials and equipment first hand. Our technical labs and clinical consulting rooms are of the highest standard. Study areas include clinical orthotics and prosthetics, where you learn to work with clients in a respectful manner. You'll work one-on-one with a diverse range of clients and learn how to assess, prescribe and plan treatment. You'll also learn about casting, cast modification, fabrication, fitting and alignment. After you complete your degree, you'll be eligible to register with the Australian Orthotic Prosthetic Association and the International Society of Prosthetics and Orthotics. You may then practice in Australia and overseas. The course structure lets you complete the required subjects for this 4.5 year degree in only four years.

Our graduates have gone on to work in areas including, public and private health settings and medical research centres. Graduates often find opportunities to work internationally in developing as well as developed countries.
