Bachelor of Agricultural Sciences

Course Description

Growing enough food to sustain the world is one of the biggest challenges we face in the 21st century. This degree trains you to be an expert in the science of agriculture so you can take on an advisory role in agriculture and farming practices. You'll learn about the relationship between plants, animals, soil and climate along with economics and management. You'll also take on subjects such as plant science, land and soil management, animal physiology, pest control, and groundwater sustainability and contamination. By combining science with business skills, you'll be equipped to help farmers improve their food production and reduce the impact on declining resources. We place a strong emphasis on work experience, so you'll complete 12 weeks of work placement over your summer break. This could take many forms, from working in a commercial seed factory in Belgium to a farming facility in India. If you start studying with us in Albury-Wodonga, you'll transfer to our Melbourne Campus from second year to complete your course. With the opening of AgriBio, the Centre for AgriBioscience, La Trobe has become the hub of agricultural science research in Victoria. The centre, which is a joint venture with the Department of Environment and Primary Industries, is equipped with state-of-the-art labs and glass houses, quarantine containment units and high quality equipment. If you're in Year 12, you can apply for the John Richards Agriculture Scholarship for future leaders in the field.
