The Master of Applied Science (Research) contains a coursework component of four subjects, available online, which has been designed to provide training in foundational research skills and a structured commencement to the Master’s thesis for applicants who have not completed an Honours degree. If you have completed an appropriate Honours degree (or Master’s preliminary) you can apply for a waiver of the coursework component. The Master’s by research degree provides you with the opportunity to deepen your knowledge of your discipline area and develop advanced skills in the conduct of independent and sustained research, through the process of exploring a substantial research question. Upon completion of your candidature, you must demonstrate through your thesis that you have developed a body of knowledge encompassing recent developments in one or more disciplines and have been able to critically apply that specialist knowledge. You must also demonstrate advanced knowledge of the research principles and methods applicable to your field of work or learning. A Master’s by research degree may also serve as an entry into the PhD program. At that higher level, you will not just be required to demonstrate mastery of your subject matter, but also to make an original contribution to knowledge. If admitted to a Master’s by research degree, it is possible to transfer into the PhD program if you demonstrate the appropriate skills and have completed no less than 12 months and no more than 18 months of full-time equivalent candidature. In addition to your meeting the entry requirements outlined below, your acceptance into a Master’s program will be subject to the availability of appropriate facilities and supervision in your chosen field of study.
