Please note due to the great demand for our programmes early applications are assessed when received and dealt with promptly. Therefore it is advisable to make early applications for an early response. If you do not yet have your final degree results this will not hinder your application as we are happy to issue conditional offer letters in such circumstances. This programme provides an alternative path into a career in law. It also should interest those considering careers outside law, in which law plays an important part. The Postgraduate Diploma in Law aims to provide an integrated programme in the practice and theory of law, supported by lectures, coursework and research projects. The academic foundation in law gained by a successful student should be sufficient to permit him or her to proceed onto the further professional training necessary to become a solicitor. A graduate will acquire a critical understanding of and approach to the diversity of legal issues in contemporary Irish society - skills useful to a career in law and transferable to employment in a wide variety of contexts including business, the public service and the voluntary sector. This is a modular programme designed to offer the maximum range of choice to students with an interest in law. These optional modules can be taken in addition to or in lieu of the core modules. For students with an interest in a specialised area of law (e.g., Immigration, Family) but who do not necessarily wish to pursue the practice of law as a career, they may find they are attending some evening and some daytime classes. Students may pursue the required modules on a full-time basis over one year, or a part-time basis over two years. Please note that students enrolled on the part-time course will be required to attend lectures during the day time. While this is a part time course, it is not a night course.

Recent graduates have found employment principally in private laws firms throughout Ireland. Some have sought employment in government and in a variety of business contexts. Some students take the Postgraduate Diploma Course in preparation for Law Society of Ireland (Blackhall Place) FE-1Entrance Exams. The programme covers all the subjects which are examinable as part of the FE-1 exams. Questions about admission to the Law Society of Ireland should be directed to: The Law Society of Ireland, Blackhall Place, Dublin 7 Phone: 01-6724802, www.lawsociety.ie. The courses offered at DIT are broadly similar in content to the Blackhall Place syllabi. The syllabi for DIT courses cover most, if not all, topics on the Blackhall Place syllabi. The syllabi for Blackhall Place FE-1 exams and other information on how to become a solicitor is available on the Law Society website noted above. Students regularly seek advice on these exams. While some students take half the FE-1 exams during their studies at DIT (usually in April) we recommend that students complete their studies at DIT before attempting any of the Law Society exams.
