This one-year Ontario College Certificate program prepares students to be successful in a variety of health science programs. Students explore their interests in the health science field while developing strong study skills and earning credits which may be transferred to other college programs. Graduates of this program are prepared to meet the eligibility requirements for a number of Algonquin College programs including: Practical Nursing, Veterinary Technician, Veterinary Assistant, Dental Assisting, Dental Hygiene, Fitness and Health Promotion, Massage Therapy, Paramedic, Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training, Respiratory Therapy, Biotechnology Technologist, Water and Waste Water Technician, Medical Radiation Technology and Radiation Safety. Students who are interested in a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) degree program should refer to the General Arts and Science - Pre-Nursing program. Graduates of the program are eligible to receive an Ontario College Certificate in General Arts and Science - One Year, with concentration in Pre-Health Sciences. Graduates can apply to another program at the College or continue their studies in Year II of the General Arts and Science Ontario College Diploma program. Students who complete this certificate can take advantage of articulation agreements with several health related programs at Algonquin. Applications must be received by February 1st. Some credits may be considered as transfer credits towards other college programs. Two-Year Diploma Program The two-year Ontario College Diploma program begins in September (for graduates of the one-year certificate program) and in January. Year II provides a well-balanced selection of courses in the social sciences and humanities. On successful completion of Year II, students receive an Ontario College Diploma. Graduates of the diploma program may be eligible to transfer some credits towards a university degree. SUCCESS FACTORS This program is well-suited for students who: Are thinking of pursuing further studies in a health or health-related field. Have good study skills. Enjoy working as a member of a team. Possess an interest in sciences and social sciences.
