In the first three semesters, students will be taught the mathematic, scientific and engineering-related foundations of the program. There will be an examination at the end of each module. Each semester's studies are worth an average of 30 credits. Alongside additional core modules, students may choose their own individual focus by selecting 5 optional modules and 25 credits in Semesters 3, 4 and 6. An integral part of the study program in Semesters 4 and 5 is two projects which are worth a total of 10 credits, which are carried out in groups of three to six students. As part of the projects, the students will be familiarized with the basics of modern project management methods, presentation and communication techniques as well as creative techniques. The students learn to acquaint themselves with a new topic on their own, organize themselves into a group and take responsibility for individual areas of the project. Semester 5 is a mobility semester that comes in three selectable options - one of them students have to decide for. Option 1 | has to be carried out as a practical project (internship) in an industrial company or a research institute. The practical project is credited with 25 points. Option 2 | has to be spent as a semester abroad at a foreign university. The courses or modules that students want to take there (with 25 credit points in total) have to be proposed to the head of the examination board and laid down in a learning agreement. Option 3 | should be regarded as exceptional case that allows students to continue their studies at the FH Aachen University. The modules to be taken stem from the area of mechanical design, manufacturing and statistics and are – except one elective module – fixed or predetermined as required courses. In addition, there is another second project and the general skills module as mentioned above. All options have the module "Allgemeine Kompetenzen" (5 credit points) in common which helps students acquire general skills which go beyond the narrower field of engineering. Examples of ways in which these skills may be acquired include tutoring or participating in important university committees. Semester 7 consists of the second Practical Project, which emphasizes the program's close links with industry, and the bachelor thesis with its subsequent presentation (thesis defense).

Mechanical engineering is one of the most important manufacturing sectors in Germany and is the engine for technical innovation. Mechanical engineers develop and construct machines and facilities with their efficient use, technical development and business requirements in mind. Careers range from development, project planning, construction and trials to production planning and monitoring, quality assurance, maintenance and service and consulting on technical use and sales. Mechanical engineering is divided into various disciplines. Mechanical engineers work for industrial firms building machines and facilities, electronics and vehicles, in engineering offices, for trade and professional associations, Technical Control Boards, in the Civil Service, in research and teaching or freelance in planning and construction or as experts. Mechanical engineering is export-based and requires engineers to be willing and able to travel. It is possible and indeed required to travel abroad for customers as a sales engineer, to spend several weeks for commissioning and longer periods working in company offices abroad. Mechanical engineers have the broadest range of career paths open to them, which, in principle, can lead to senior management, and which are achieved by many engineers with the appropriate qualifications and commitment.
