Course Description

If the study of human lives, societal changes and social causes and consequences interest you, then a major in sociology at Troy University is for you. As a sociology student, you will learn about all aspects of human interactions, including cohabitation, divorce, sexual variations, causes and impact of crime, aging of the population, the strained health care system, salary inequities based on race or gender, alcohol and drug abuse and our relationships with economic and political systems. You will study, think about and critically analyze your surroundings, institutions (like marriage, education and work) and daily social interactions. Your studies will develop your understanding of the impact you have on society. You will also learn to utilize your “sociological imagination” and explore how decisions that appear to be personal choices are actually influenced by patterns of social behavior shared with others in your social groups. Troy University’s undergraduate sociology program will also prepare you for higher education in the field in preparation for research, teaching and careers requiring advanced degrees.
