Washington College offers unique opportunities for exploring anthropology, or the study of human nature and human society. Courses focus on evolution and societal development, traditional ecological knowledge, environmental anthropology, experimental archaeology, and archaeological ethics. Areas of focus include the Chesapeake Bay region, Mesoamerica, and the Southeastern United States. Courses in environmental and marine archaeology are offered. Anthropology graduates have the knowledge to understand the complexities of human behavior in the past and present and the practical skills to conduct rigorous research into the environmental and social forces that influence human cultural development across the globe. Through courses in the subfields of sociocultural anthropology, archaeology, linguistics, and biological anthropology, students are exposed to multiple perspectives for solving theoretical and practical issues.
