The Graduate Program in Life Sciences Program in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is a joint program combining faculty with expertise in biochemistry, molecular biology, and structural biology from the University of Maryland schools of Dentistry and Medicine, and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). The scope of research in the program has increased greatly, with expansion beyond standard biochemistry research to include biochemical processes at the molecular and cellular level, including the regulation of gene expression at both transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels, viral DNA packaging, DNA repair, cell cycle checkpoints, tumor suppressor structure and function, drug resistance in cancer, regulation of calcium and signal transduction pathways, enzyme catalysis, cardiac muscle regulation, complex polysaccharide structure/function, organic and bio-organic mechanisms, DNA-binding proteins, DNA-binding drugs, retrovirus structure and function, and studies on HIV.
