Biophysical Sciences - PhD

Course Description

The University of Chicago offers a manifestly interdisciplinary PhD Program in Biophysical Sciences, intended for students in the Physical Sciences who wish to probe the interface between the physical and the biological sciences. The program is designed for scientists outstanding undergraduate records in one or more physical disciplines (Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, and Engineering). We provide our students with research experiences that overlap traditional academic boundaries, and with the training, community, and facilities they need to work between existing fields and to create new ones. The Graduate Program in Biophysical Sciences combines the fields of Synthetic Biology, Systems Biology, Chemical Biology, Computation, and Engineering on top of a strong foundation of Chemistry, Physics, Biochemistry, and Cell Biology--covering the dynamics and structure of life from quantum and statistical mechanics, through the resolution of light, and up to the form and function of the basic biological unit (the cell).
