Description The University offers a bachelor of music education (B.M.E.) for students who wish to obtain licensure to teach in elementary and secondary schools. Music education students choose between two concentrations—the choral/general concentration or the instrumental/general concentration—each of which leads to Indiana kindergarten-12 teaching licensure. Students also may add a choral or instrumental option to their degrees, resulting in full K-12 licensure. Coursework, observation and teaching in the public school setting, and participation in professional organizations prepare students for a successful teaching career. In addition, students participate in several special collaborative music programs (instrument and voice coaching, computer composition, ensemble support) with local schools.

Careers The Music Education Program has a strong heritage of training highly qualified music teachers since the institution's founding in 1865—and continues to attract students challenged and excited by the prospect of educating young people in the rewarding field of music. Our graduates have achieved distinction throughout the State of Indiana, the nation, and the world as inspiring teachers, renowned performing artists, and visionary music business leaders. The School of Music takes great pride in the many outstanding music education graduates who teach in public and private schools in Indiana and throughout the country. These alumni have distinguished themselves in the elementary school general music classroom; as middle school band, chorus, jazz, orchestra, and general teachers; and as high school band, chorus, jazz, and orchestra directors.
