B.A., Major in Art History

Course Description

Seton Hall University's art history major is a vibrant program that has attracted an outstanding faculty with Ph.D.'s from the most prestigious American universities. Because of the University's proximity to the world class museums of New York City, art history majors have the unique opportunity to study major masterpieces first-hand. A special feature of the program is the option, offered to students who have completed their sophomore year with a minimum GPA of 3.0, to enroll in the five-year Bachelor of Arts/Master of Arts Program in Museum Professions. This program allows students to graduate in five years with not only a bachelor's degree in art history but also a master's degree in museum professions. For more on this option, including a list of jobs held by program graduates, see artsci.shu.edu/artmusic/museum/index.htm. The art history curriculum includes general survey courses in western and American art, as well as a choice of period courses, from classical to 20th-century art. Topical courses, such as "Leonardo and Michelangelo," or "Van Gogh and his Contemporaries" and thematic courses, such as "Women and Art," are also offered. With permission of their adviser, students are allowed to take courses in archaeology and anthropology. Studying abroad is also strongly encouraged. To attain a Bachelor of Communication and The Arts in Art History students must earn 120 credits. In addition to the core curriculum, they complete 42 credits in their art history major. The remaining credits are completed through elective courses. To graduate, students must have a minimum GPA of 2.0.
