AS Classical Civilisation will introduce students to the world of the Ancient Romans; specifically the orator, philosopher and statesman, Marcus Tullius Cicero (through study of his life and times) and the great general Hannibal (through study of the 2nd Punic War). Our culture today owes so much to what we have learned from ancient civilisations. Our ideas about Literature, Philosophy, History, Politics, Theatre, Art and Architecture have been profoundly influenced by the people, politics and buildings of the ancient world and the names of the places, gods, heroes and writers of that time - Troy, Zeus, Achilles, Homer - still have relevance for us. As part of the AS Classical Civilisation course students will have a chance to visit Rome as well as several local museums and places of interest. No previous knowledge of ancient societies is expected or necessary, though students should have a high degree of language and literature skills and will develop these by exploring academic areas including critical analysis, evaluation and textual analysis. Essay writing forms an essential part of the course and the academic and specialised skills gained on the course are intended to be transferable through to further studies or employment. Classical Civilisation is a recommended subject for any student thinking of a career in teaching, the law, journalism or politics.
