AQA GCE AS Level English Language A

Course Description

English Language This is a varied course that differs from the GCSE language element. This is not creative writing but it does form a good basis for understanding how language works in order to communicate more effectively. In this course we will linguistically examine and compare data extracts. These will include samples of spoken interaction, written text and the ever evolving language of electronic communication. You will practise the demanding skill of linguistic analysis which includes using a wide range of grammatical terminology. Examples of language features explored include: sentence structures, verb tenses, types of nouns, adjectives, adverbs and conjunctions. These skills will also be applied to language samples produced by young children in varying stages of their first language development. What do children say and how do they develop language skills? Original research and theories underpin this element. Assessment: Unit 1: Seeing through language - A two hour written examination. Unit 2: Representation and language. A linguistic analysis of 3-5 pieces of student selected data exploring the representation of an individual, a group or an issue.
