Course Description

Prepare to become a “converged” digital journalist, one comfortable reporting for print, television, radio and the web. Special attention in Digital Media Journalism is focused on great storytelling using journalistic values and the latest technology. Hone your skills beginning as a freshman by working with Ashland University’s converged student media outlets. As an Ashland DMJ major, you'll learn writing, reporting and editing skills while also learning to capture images using DSLR and video cameras. Classes are capped at 16 students to maximize your learning environment and you'll work side-by-side with your professors. Beginning your freshman year, you'll develop, research, write and publish stories in Ashland’s award-winning student newspaper, The Collegian, and online @ashlandmedia.com. In addition to writing and technology skills, the major focuses on short and long form storytelling aesthetics, news values, editing judgment and journalistic ethics. What You’ll Love About the Journalism Major: * Classes maintain a media center-like environment where converged content producers create a variety of content. * You receive one-on-one attention from your professors. * You will see your words — and byline — in print, online and on the air as early as your freshman year. * You’ll learn to shoot images using the latest Canon DSLR and vieo cameras. * You’ll develop story ideas, interview, write and edit The Collegian, Ashland’s award-winning student newspaper. * You’ll build a strong e-portfolio of work that will help you find a job after graduation. * You’ll explore the role and effects of media, the Internet and social networking on today's journalism, and how you can use these tools to reshape the industry.
