Auckland University of Technology (AUT) has four campuses in Auckland, a range of international research programmes, the fastest growing university enrolment in New Zealand and is an important contributor to higher learning in New Zealand. AUT was established on 1 January 2000 as the eighth university in New Zealand and is a new university built on the base of older non-university institutions. With a long tradition of trades and technical training, AUT has been known to Aucklanders as Auckland Institute of Technology and before that Auckland Technical Institute. To a still older generation it was Seddon Memorial Technical College, with origins dating back to 1895. This history has given AUT unique roots as a New Zealand university and quite different organisational assumptions and educational values. AUT is is an outwards-facing, diverse and relevant institution, engaged with the current and future issues of industry, business and the community, as well as the wider issues that confront our economy and society. Students AUT is open to students from different backgrounds and provides an excellent student experience for those with the potential and aspirations to succeed. AUT prides itself in its high quality teaching staff, and innovative facilities and study programmes, delivering highly capable and employable graduates to the market place. AUT has an enrolment of nearly 18,500 equivalent full-time students. International students comprise about 13% of AUT's student community with 20% of those students in postgraduate programmes. AUT's 2500 foreign students represent New Zealand's second largest international enrolment. New Zealand ranks amongst the top five countries in the world in terms of the highest percentage of international students in their tertiary enrolments. AUT is a signatory to the 'Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students', which provides a framework for education providers to ensure a high standard of care and wellbeing is maintained for international students while they live and study in New Zealand.
