This course develops engineers with a firm grounding in the fundamentals of solid-state power electronic circuits, modern electrical systems and embedded control and computer systems. It aims to provide a transformative, inspiring and engaging learning experience by focusing on the design, analysis, modelling, evaluation and maintenance of a wide range of electronic and electrical systems. The course focuses on machines and their control in applications as diverse as electric vehicles, modern railway transportation systems, industrial robots and intelligent buildings. The underpinning knowledge base includes power electronics, real-time embedded systems, control systems, robotics as well as analog and digital electronics. The course will provide the know-how to specify, design and evaluate energy-efficient mature electrically-driven systems. Project-based learning forms an integral part of the course, with project modules being highly valued by employers. These projects include the design, construction and testing of an analog voice-over amplifier, a maze-solving autonomous robot with its associated drive and control circuitry as well as a full-custom design and implementation of a digital system utilizing industry standard design tools. The projects are also designed to enhance your practical skills as well as develop your teamwork and project management skills. The course shares a common Year 1 with the Electronic Engineering as well as the Computer Systems and Robotics BEng Honours degrees, and if you wish you can transfer courses at the end of that year.
