Course Description

The Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of Social Science double degree program is designed for students whose interests span the Arts and Social Sciences. It will produce versatile graduates who can work across a range of academic and professional disciplines, including the opportunity to develop global perspectives and communication skills in an Asian language. In the Social Science area, students can design their own academic program within the Bachelor of Social Science course structure, which must include a Social Science Major. This qualification in Social Science can be combined with one of the following Arts majors: Cultural and Social Analysis; English; History and Political Thought; International Relations and Asian Studies; Islamic Studies; Philosophy; Linguistics; Indigenous Australian Studies; Arabic, Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese. The degree gives you the professional and scholarly education to take a leadership role in urban management, strategic planning and policy development. The coursework includes preparation in professional practice, history, and the theoretical and legal frameworks for planning. You will develop skills in a range of relevant areas including governance, urban finance and sustainable strategies. The three year Bachelor of Social Science component of this program is only offered at Penrith. The final year Master of Urban Management and Planning is only offered at Parramatta.

Social policy development Policy development involves researching, compiling and analysing a range of facts that relate to the benefit of society. It involves working with a range of government agencies and community groups to pinpoint relevant solutions. Social advocacy and activism Social advocacy involves representing the needs of children and the community and acting as an ambassador to achieve goals that are integral to their development. Advocacy can be on behalf of a not for profit or government or non-government organisation. Casework and case management A caseworker provides individuals with advice, services and direction that relate to their interests. Caseworkers work for a variety of government, non-government and voluntary organisations usually in the areas of child protection, drug and alcohol services or community health. Human services sector Work in the human services sector involves working in a number of organisations including aged care, community development, education providers and transport services.
