The Bachelor of International Studies /Bachelor of Social Science degree is a broadly based, inter-disciplinary four-year double degree offering flexibility and choice within a wide range of offerings in the social sciences, as well as studies of International Relations and Asian Studies and an Asian language. The degree seeks to equip all students with the interdisciplinary and specialist skills and knowledge that a new graduate would need on entering the workforce or on proceeding to advanced study. There is a Core of 11 units offering an introduction to the humanities and a solid grounding in the social sciences. Students choose a major from the social sciences; a major in International Relations and Asian Studies, and a sub-major in an Asian language. The double degree provides a wide base for understanding issues in the complex, culturally diverse and ever-changing social and international environment of the 21st century both in Australia and Asia.

Foreign affairs Diplomats and foreign ministers serve as representatives of their governments and work to protect the interests of their country. Careers in foreign affairs involve persuasive and fair conversation,critical analysis of policies, cultural engagement and extensive travel. Study of an asian language increases opportunity in foreign affairs. International organisations International organisations such as the United Nations or European Union advise on policy and maintain fair international relations. International organisations fill a variety of roles in communications, administration and law. Social policy development Policy development involves researching, compiling and analysing a range of facts that relate to the benefit of society. It involves working with a range of government agencies and community groups to pinpoint relevant solutions. Social advocacy and activism Social advocacy involves representing the needs of children and the community and acting as an ambassador to achieve goals that are integral to their development. Advocacy can be on behalf of a not for profit or government or non-government organisation.
