Ship Science is a Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering course unique to the University of Southampton. It applies engineering science to the field of ships and other maritime structures. The three year BEng provides the core naval architecture and marine engineering knowledge and is ideal for those wanting to pursue a research career, further studies or work outside of engineering. Our BEng Ship Science degree coures is ideal if you wish or need to complete your studies in three years. In the first two years, the course content is identical to that of the MEng courses. The first two years of the BEng Ship Science course will provide you with a broad-based knowledge of engineering methods for the design and maintenance of marine systems. You will learn hydrodynamics and seakeeping and the fundamentals of naval architecture. We will also teach you computational and mathematical modelling techniques. Maritime design coursework forms an integral part of this course. In year three, you will carry out a marine craft concept design challenge to experience working as a team and an individual research based project of your choice. You will also have the opportunity to select specialised options, from manufacturing and materials to yacht and high performance craft.
