For the student of English literature, French is a particularly relevant choice for a joint course, since for much of its history the English literary tradition has been strongly influenced by French literature, culture, and---more recently---critical theory. This combination, which offers you a wide variety of options in both subjects, will develop your linguistic and analytical skills, your theoretical sophistication, and your understanding of the ways in which different languages reflect different cultures. On the English side of your course, you will cover a broad timespan of English literature, from the Middle Ages to the 21st century, with an emphasis on the relationship of literature to its historical and cultural context; we also offer a range of options in film and creative writing. On the French side, you can complement your language learning with modules on French history and contemporary society, French literature and film, or French linguistic studies. Throughout your degree you will also be encouraged to cultivate an awareness of the place of French language and culture in the wider international context.
