Course Description

Building on our exceptional general Mechanical Engineering courses, this four-year integrated masters degree course in Mechanical Engineering / Automotive Engineering provides you with specialist skills and knowledge to pursue a successful career in the automotive sector. The course covers a broad range of design and operational aspects related to modern automobile systems, from the structure and dynamics of cars, noise and vibration issues, to aspects of human factors. On this course, you will learn the core principles of vehicle dynamics, structural design, propulsion and automotive electronics. In years one and two we will advance your understanding of key mechanical engineering subjects. The first two years of this degree are common with the MEng Mechanical Engineering. In your third and fourth year, you have the opportunity to specialise in subjects including race car aerodynamics, composites engineering and automobile systems. A management module will help to prepare you for your future career. You will also carry out an individual project and group design project to further your practical learning. Students also get the option to participate in the Formula Student group design project. During your studies you also have the opportunity to go on an industrial work placement. You can go on placement for one semester, one year or during the summer holidays of your second and third years. It can help boost your academic performance and prepare you for your career.

Career outcomes

We have graduates in a variety of positions including: simulation and analysis engineer, design engineer and production engineer. Some of our students now work for Jaguar Land Rover, Transport for London and Triumph Motorcycles. A dedicated Employment Officer will be on hand for each discipline to help you build your skills profile and realise your ambition. We also have connections with local, national and international employers as well as the University Careers and Employability Service.
