BSc Mathematics with Actuarial Science

Course Description

If you want to direct and apply your mathematical skills to a career in business, finance, or insurance, this could be the programme for you. Students are provided with a comprehensive and coherent programme of education in mathematics, statistics, and actuarial science, and can choose between many final year options in line with their interests and future career aims. All of our actuarial science programmes provide students with a professionally recognised education. By doing sufficiently well in corresponding modules, you will kick-start your graduate career with exemption from Subjects CT1-CT8 of the Core Technical professional exams of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, which are internationally recognised. On graduation you’ll be well equipped to begin your actuarial career with advanced professional standing, or to follow many other careers that require high-level quantitative skills, including those within the wider financial services industry. Actuaries are the world’s financial architects and engineers. They design, build and maintain financial institutions which can survive fluctuating inflation, rapidly changing interest rates and the problems presented by changing patterns of living and dying, eg both the young dying prematurely from AIDS and pensioners living longer than ever before. The expertise of an Actuary is vital to the management of pension funds, life assurance societies, merchant banks, general insurance companies, our National Insurance Scheme and to investment by all financial institutions. Actuaries are problem solvers, tackling the uncertainties of future events using their skills in mathematics, probability and statistics. This degree programme will provide you with the technical skills in mathematics and actuarial science required to prepare you for a career as an actuary. The University of Southampton is one of the few Universities in the country to be able to offer exeptions from all eight Core Technical Examinations from the Faculty and Institute of Actuaries, CT1 - CT8.
