BSc (Hons) Podiatry

Course Description

The University of Southampton is the only Russell Group University in the UK to offer a BSc (Hons) podiatry degree. As a result, studying here provides a unique student-centred, research- led learning environment. This three year full time programme is focussed on the recognition and management of disorders in the lower limb and foot to enable restoration of patient mobility and independence. You will spend 100 per cent of your work placements in an external clinical setting, either with the NHS or private practice. On graduation you will be eligible to apply to register as a podiatrist with the Health and Care Professions Council. Your qualification will also be recognised by the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists. This BSc degree in podiatry teaches you a range of treatments for foot and lower limb complaints, including skin and nail treatments, the mechanical correction of gait and posture, and some surgical techniques. You will learn to address all sorts of different problems, from prescribing or making corrective devices to aid mobility, to helping a sprinter improve their 100m time, for example. You will also get first class learning facilities and quality time with internationally recognised experts in podiatry. Plus you will benefit from the findings of our cutting edge research projects, giving you the most up-to-date knowledge. As with all our courses BSc Podiatry is a values based programme. This means you will be expected to evidence emotional skills like empathy and compassion.

Career outcomes

Podiatrists treat people with lower limb disorders like limb length difference, Achilles tendonitis, or ankle sprains. What is more, they treat diverse groups of patients, some of whom have a wide range of systemic problems, including diabetes, poor circulation, rheumatoid arthritis, or skin disorders. After graduation it is likely that you will work in the NHS. But a qualified podiatrist may also find work in the commercial sector, as well as in education and research. Mostly our graduates have worked as clinical practitioners and progressed through to managerial posts. However, some have chosen to gain further qualifications in specialist areas like sport, surgery and paediatrics. In 2013 an incredible 95% of our students went into work or further study within six months of graduating. That is the perceived calibre of our podiatry degree graduates.
