NRF1 BSc Management Sciences and French

Course Description

In this joint degree your study of management is combined with learning Europe's most widely spoken native language. France boasts Europe's largest and the world's fourth-largest economy and has strong trade links with the UK. Over 1000 British companies do business in France, with UK exports to France worth over €30billion a year, and over 2,500 French companies have invested in the UK, totalling almost €100billion (Foreign Office 2011). Professionals in international corporations enjoy an advantage if they know French. In Management Sciences you study managerial decision-making processes, investigate commonly used management science techniques and assess the means by which people and systems can be managed to improve organisational performance. On the French side of your degree you will study the language and be able to select from a range of modules on the culture, literature and history of the French-speaking world. Language learning will be a core component throughout your course. In addition to enhancing your employment opportunities by studying French as part of your degree our programme builds broader skills which are vital for post-university life and valued by employers. We help you to strengthen your ability to think critically and consistently and to communicate clearly, to analyse and understand varying points of view, to organise ideas and to work both independently and cooperatively as part of a team.

Career outcomes

Employability is embedded into modules from the first year onwards, right from the first lecture. We offer a number of optional employability modules. Your specialities in intercultural communication, listening and language will be highly valuable to employers. A year abroad also gives you the chance to achieve something away from education-centred activity, such as gaining relevant work experience to help form your future plans. With many employers now expecting extracurricular or voluntary experience, this can prove vital.
