Planning effective transportation systems presents exciting challenges, as does their engineering, both in developed and developing countries. Issues include: the widespread use of private cars, the effects of transport on all aspects of the environment, congestion on roads, new towns and industrial estates, old towns and urban renewal, the economics of transport, the movement of freight, the difficulties of public transport, the potential of new systems and operations on transport, and national and international interaction. Our MSc in Transportation Planning and Engineering has taught for over 40 years. We will give you a firm technical knowledge of the theory and concepts involved in transportation. You will benefit from the insight of our world-class Transportation Research Group, as well as our links to the transport industry and external organisations who contribute to the course. The one year full-time course starts in September each year and includes two semesters of taught modules and a summer period devoted to your individual project, from which you produce a Dissertation. Lectures take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week – allowing the course to be undertaken on a part-time basis over 2 years, with attendance on one day each week. The course includes a 2 day residential field trip (in 2016-7 we visited London) which in the past has featured behind-the-scenes site visits, museum trips, and a 'transport challenge' competition.
