Course Details

MSc Engineering in the Coastal Environment

Course Description

This programme is uniquely provided jointly by academics from Civil Engineering, based at Highfield Campus and Ocean and Earth Science, based at the National Oceanography Centre. The programme is strongly linked to industry and focussed on applied issues in the coastal zone. Our experience is that there is a strong and growing demand for such individuals both in Britain and abroad, with supportive alumni found across the industry. The overall goal is to educate technically-orientated coastal practitioners for suitable employment in coastal engineering, both in consultancies and relevant areas of government. In order to achieve this, students will develop a systematic understanding and critical awareness of coastal issues in order to simultaneously broaden and deepen their knowledge of this area. You will achieve this through lectures, seminars and team work. This knowledge will be consolidated through a research project (dissertation) conducted with a partner in coastal engineering practiseboth nationally and internationally. The best dissertation each year is awarded the "HR Wallingford prize". As a result of this programme, students are trained to deal with complex issues systematically and creatively and make sound judgements within the field of Coastal Engineering and Environmental Management.
