On this degree programme, you will study the theory and practice of archaeology, covering a wide range of periods ranging from the Palaeolithic to the medieval period. There are also certain science modules available to you, which will boost your overall understanding of the subject. At Reading, our Archaeology programme cover British and European archaeology, the archaeology of the Roman world and Near Eastern archaeology. As well as the archaeology of particular places and particular periods we also have specialist interests in thematic areas: for example - social archaeology, the archaeology of gender, burial archaeology, environmental archaeology and general theory and methodology in archaeology. One of the key focuses of this programme is to provide with a wealth of experience and transferable skills so that you can exceed in your chosen career path. For single-honours students, a three-week placement opportunity at the Silchester Field School will provide you with hands-on archaeological experience. Moreover, we host CV writing workshops and Meet the Archaeologists Day" events, which are designed to help you tailor your CV for a career in either archaeology or a completely different field altogether.

Many of our students go on to develop successful careers in the archaeology/heritage sectors. Our recent graduates are represented amongst the staff of major employers such as Oxford Archaeology, Wessex Archaeology, the Museum of London Archaeological Service, English Heritage and the British Museum as well as local companies such as Thames Valley Archaeological Services. The interdisciplinary nature of our degrees and their emphasis on transferable skills provide an excellent platform for postgraduate degree study in archaeology and a wide range of careers outside the archaeology/heritage sector. Our recent graduates have gained employment in career paths as diverse as teaching, policing, communications, IT, management, finance, marketing and tourism, library/museums, local government and public relations.
