Course Description

Accepting both deaf and hearing students, and using Signing in a uniquely creative way within live performance and drama workshops, studying on the TAEDS programme will give you access to a unique combination of subject areas which demand academic rigour whilst offering vocational skills. You will be able to pursue a passion for theatre and performance whilst also deepening your knowledge and understanding of Sign language and the formal education sector, developing practical experience in teaching. Provision is made for sign language interpreters, professional note-takers and English Language support should you be entitled to additional help with academic reading and written work. This is provided in a 'Total Communication' environment that will enable you to partake in discussions and practical work whether you are a deaf or hearing student. You will be entered for "Signature" accredited professional qualifications in British Sign Language. A compulsory work placement module must be taken in Year 3. You can arrange your placement to match your own field of developing interest. Of those who study Theatre Arts, Education and Deaf Studies, many move into education via PGCE courses or as teaching assistants or support workers in both mainstream and special needs schools. Others have entered professional theatre as actors, directors and technicians or have established their own theatre companies.
