Course Description

Food - the essential fuel of life - is the business of Europe's largest and most buoyant industry. Featuring regularly in the national media, food issues are often to be found at the centre of topical debates on such areas as human health and disease, global shortages and surpluses, consumer demand, the rights and wrongs of GM, and food quality and nutrition. Its study has a direct impact on the quality and enjoyment of every aspect of our lives. Studying Food and Nutritional Sciences at Reading offers you the broad-based science education that both underpins these issues and prepares you for a secure, exciting and relevant career. Nutrition has become a major issue for consumers and nutritionists are playing an increasingly important role in ensuring that consumers can access convenient food of high quality that is nutritionally beneficial. Nutritionists with training in food science are therefore now at the forefront of new product development, packaging design and relaying health messages to the consumer. This degree will also provide graduates with the expertise to work in nutrition education and promotion, and within government departments concerned with public health issues. There are also opportunities for our graduates to pursue higher taught (MSc) or research (PhD) degrees in the area of food and health. Nutrition & Food Science is the scientific study of the health related impact of diet and other properties of foods. The degree programme provides a strong academic training in the science of nutrition and the related disciplines of food science, physiology, biochemistry, genetics and microbiology. Our core curriculum has been accredited by the Nutrition Society and you will be eligible to register as an 'Associate Registered Nutritionist' following graduation.

Food is Europe's largest and most buoyant industry, and nutritionists with food science training work at the forefront of product development and package design. As a graduate of this course, you can become a registered nutritionist. You can work within the food industry and related sectors, for companies such as Kraft, Mars, Marks & Spencer, and GlaxoSmithKline. Alternatively you could use your degree for a career in nutrition education and promotion, or work for a government department concerned with public health. Additionally, you may choose to move into other areas, such as teaching, accountancy and environmental health. This degree can also be a stepping stone for an MSc or PhD in the area of food and health.
