BSc Animal Science

Course Description

If you're considering a career in animal nutrition and health or want to prepare for further training in veterinary science, then Animal Science at Reading is an excellent starting point. This degree programme covers the fundamental and applied biology relating to the use of animals for production, leisure and companionship, and is designed to provide you with the sound scientific basis required to excel within this vibrant and diverse industry. During your studies you will have the opportunity to cover a comprehensive range of core subject areas, as well as choose optional modules that best suit your interests or goals. Intercalated year A one-year BSc Honours Animal Science programme is available for suitably qualified students reading for degrees in Veterinary Medicine who wish to take an intercalated degree. Career outcomes

The mix of natural and social sciences covering a range of different animal species, coupled with transferable skills, research techniques and regular experience of industry-led, problem-based learning provides you with excellent employment prospects. Our courses are rated particularly highly with respect to relevance to employers (Teaching Quality Assessment). First employment destinations of students who have completed the Animal Science programme in the last five years include: teaching, outreach officers, scientific officers for government bodies and for conservation research both in the UK and abroad, Nutritionists for farm, companion and other specialist animals. Animal Science graduates have also undertaken further study (BSc Veterinary Science, MSc Animal Science) and more advanced research (PhD in animal, nutritional and pharmaceutical sciences). Typical employers of our graduates include AB Agri, SDS diet services, Diatex, DEFRA, Ocean Mammal Institute, Mauritian Wildlife Foundation.
