This exciting new interdisciplinary programme will provide an opportunity for in-depth study of international law, security and terrorism. The turn of the new century has witnessed a continuing shift in the nature of conflict and security, with attention turning to issues such as threats and attacks by non-state actors, the responses of states to threats from terrorism and the spread of weapons of mass destruction and the idea of post-conflict rebuilding. This inter-disciplinary programme will appeal to students from both disciplines with a strong interest in studying modern warfare, security and terrorism. The conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq show that it is necessary to study these conflicts from the perspectives of both politics and law to gain a complete picture of the issues and to be able to analyse the arguments and outcomes. This programme will allow students to explore key legal and political issues in contemporary security as they relate to warfare, conflict and terrorism, to place conflict and security issues and events within a legal and political context and to understand the relationship between law and politics in international relations. It will also facilitate the analysis of the justifications, causes and consequences of war, conflict and terrorism, including the legal and political responses available to deal with international security threats.
