What is Communication Sciences and Disorders ? The Doctor of Philosophy in communication sciences and disorders allows students to major in audiology, speech-language pathology, and speech, language, and hearing science. This level of study emphasizes research techniques in speech, language, and hearing science, and the opportunity to explore the theoretical aspects of clinical techniques, experience in college teaching and other preparation for careers in teaching and research. PhD students are expected to complete course work in a major area of focus and to demonstrate research competency. Students must also demonstrate, through a dissertation, contribution to knowledge in the areas of speech, language and hearing science, speech language pathology or audiology. Eighteen doctoral faculty in CSD, as well as faculty in other departments and adjunct faculty in the community, provide expertise and research mentoring in a wide variety of scientific and clinical aspects of audiology, speech-language pathology, and speech and hearing sciences.
