What is Anthropology ? The Master of Arts degree in Anthropology emphasizes methodological training that prepares students to conduct independent anthropological research. While developing fluency with topics in three traditional subdisciplines (archaeology, biological anthropology, and sociocultural anthropology), students also take courses that prepare them for independent research, which culminates in a thesis. Students work closely with faculty mentors to identify projects that contribute to broader disciplinary debates. A representative list of recent theses is available on the departmental website: http://www.artsci.uc.edu/departments/anthropology/graduate-programs/anthropology-theses.html An MA degree provides preparation for application to a PhD program in Anthropology (not currently offered at UC). The PhD is required for a career in academic research and four-year college teaching, and for many nonacademic positions at the professional level. The MA degree in anthropology may also be appropriate preparation for further study in such fields as law, medicine, or business, where the student expects to work in a multicultural or international environment. Students who have completed their education at the MA level have found employment in cultural resources management (archaeology), museums, education, and related public service fields, including public health.
