A foundation year is an introductory course, integrated with a subsequent degree programme, that is designed to prepare students for an undergraduate study. You do not need to have any prior qualifications to apply, and at the end of the course you can progress to a degree in any arts and humanities subject at Bristol. The course combines relevant skills with an opportunity to explore how our ideas of what it means to be human have developed over time. Examples of topics might include: watching and discussing a contemporary film; reading and analysing a play by Shakespeare; examining how the concept of what it is to be human has changed with the emergence of women's rights; discussing ethical questions, such as use of the death penalty; exploring what it was like to be human in 1600 or 600 AD, or earlier, through evidence of paintings, music or archaeological finds.
