The programme is broadly based to provide students with the knowledge expected of a technician employed within the Civil Engineering Industry. The teaching team are encouraged by the success of many ex-students who have risen to senior positions within Local Authorities and the water supply industry in addition to the Construction industry. Others have gone on to run successful companies of their own. Students have also continued their studies at degree level in Civil Engineering and related fields.

The industry covers many different activities: house construction, multi-storey buildings; sewage and water treatment plants; dams; road and rail networks are just a few of the projects that students from this programme could be involved with. Employers can vary from public limited companies, contractors, consultants and local authorities. Central Government departments such as the Ministry of Defence or bodies such as the Highway Agencies or National Health Service purchase a great deal of construction services, usually using intermediary companies who specialise in project management. The breadth of potential employment is such that it is essential for students to develop transferable skills that can be applied in any context.
