Youth work is about realising justice for young people, securing their well-being and recognising their human rights, entitlements and obligations. The role of a youth worker is diverse, with many exciting and challenging career opportunities. This program taps into this diversity by working towards securing the environments in which all young people can explore their individual and collective capabilities and thrive intellectually, physically and creatively. You’ll develop skills and knowledge in identifying the different needs of young people by combining workshops, field trips and practical work experience. This program forms the basis for youth work practice, advocacy, planning, management and policy decisions. Youth workers are found in local governments, health services, youth refuges and housing programs. They are also employed in: alcohol and other drug agencies major welfare services youth justice settings school support programs educational institutions national and international organisations.

Youth workers are everywhere, both in Australia and overseas. You might work with local government as a youth development officer in: youth resource centres health services community centres mental health drug and alcohol agencies. Key welfare services such as The Salvation Army, Berry Street and Anglicare also employ youth workers. Youth workers find themselves in positions to help the community, working in youth justice and crisis centres, school support programs, disability services and engaging in education, training and research. Careers Graduates can progress to further study in areas such as international development, education, counselling and social policy.
