Course Description

Textile designers have the specialist skills to make decisions about colour, structure, surface texture and pattern, weight and yarn, fabric composition and appropriate methods of manufacture. In this program you will explore design and creativity, develop technical and sustainability knowledge and learn digital media skills, all of which will enable you to translate textile concepts into marketable products. You can specialise in surface pattern (print) or constructed textiles (knit and weave). You’ll complete a range of creative projects resulting in a professional portfolio you can present to external clients. You will also take part in industry-related projects and develop communication, business and computer-aided textile design (CATD) skills, which will meet global industry needs for your future success.

Career outcomes

Textile designers have the skills to integrate with other design and creative enterprise sectors. Some graduates of this program have set up small businesses, while others work alongside media, fashion, interior, merchandising and industrial design graduates. As a textile designer your work activities may include: research and resource collection trend and forecasting analysis marketing and demographics colour forecasting design and illustration trends computer-aided design and manufacturing global digital supply chain communication and presentation business and ethics sustainable design and production.
