MEng (Hons) Electronic and Computer Systems Engineering

Course Description

Human beings are already greatly outnumbered by embedded systems, but the exploitation of their capability has hardly begun. This course teaches you to combine digital electronics, microprocessors and software so that you can explore the potential of embedded systems for yourself. We all use many embedded systems already - think of mobile phones, games consoles, engine management systems and wireless routers. But embedded systems will soon be with us everywhere: our clothes will monitor our health, our glasses will give us directions, our phones will give us the right data before we know we wanted it and our vehicle entertainment system will respond to our moods. To develop such exciting new products, the embedded systems industry needs the right type of graduates - those having not just software skills, but also the expertise to design specific electronic solutions and their electrical connections to the outside world. There is a huge shortage of graduates to meet the current requirements of the embedded systems industry, let alone its future needs. Our Electronic and Computer Systems Engineering course will equip you with the digital electronic, microprocessor and software skills to design, build and integrate the technologies behind the products of the future. Our courses have a common first year – your ‘essential tool kit’: this gives the flexibility to change course at the end of Year 1 or in some cases at the end of Year 2. It also means that students entering the School on a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) course can change to a Master of Engineering (MEng) course if their first year performance is sufficiently strong. Years 1 and 2 of the BEng and MEng courses are similar: from there on each course develops its own flavour and engineering emphasis and each student can further tailor their course with optional modules so suit personal preferences and aptitudes.

Career outcomes

Our graduates are highly employable and sought after. This course gives you the skills to work anywhere in the embedded systems world, from the intricate detail of microprocessor architecture, through modern computer networks to complex industrial systems. But in such an exciting and rapidly evolving area of technology, this qualification and skill-set will take you anywhere at the forefront of innovation. The Government’s first destination statistics for the last 3 years indicate that almost 90% of our graduates, on average, are in professional employment 6 months after graduating.
