BEng. Electronic & Information Engineering

Course Description

This programme provides students with a thorough understanding of electronic engineering and information engineering design techniques. The diverse nature of the programme means students are able to develop a strong foundation in electronic engineering and information engineering whilst learning general communications and computer networks theory and practice. Academics within the Department of Informatics are world-leading experts in their fields and students on this programme will benefit from their decades of knowledge and experience across six research groups. There is also a strong focus on developing mathematical skills which will be used for analysis and design of control systems and communication systems. Students will study modules across circuit theory, database systems, and hardware design, with optional modules in the final year to specialise in robotics, pattern recognition, computer security, and other advanced topics. This programme enables students to think more broadly, translating electronic engineering and information engineering into everyday life through security and mobile and personal communications. Structure & assessments: This programme is ideal for students who are able to think both analytically and creatively. There is a strong problem-solving component in relation to design and information engineering. All problem-solving skills are assessed through written examinations, project reports and coursework. Students will also gain essential practical skills in preparing technical reports and presentations, using scientific literature, writing computer programmes, using computational tools and hands-on skills in electronic engineering. The practical, design and research elements are assessed through laboratory write-ups, design projects, presentations, research project reports and oral examinations.

Career outcomes

The Careers Service and the Department of Informatics run an 18 week Careers programme for Informatics students which includes skills sessions and visits from top employers. Our graduates go on to successful careers in a range of organisations including banking, finance, management, and the major software houses, where they work mainly on analysis, design, implementation and maintenance of software applications and systems. Many of our graduates alternatively choose further study.
