The first two years of the MEng in Structural Engineering with Architectural Design share the same courses as Structural Engineering. The remainder of the programme focuses on issues relevant to architectural design. The aim is to produce high quality structural engineers who have an understanding of architecture and an appreciation of the role of architects in the design process, through working with practising engineers and architects. The programme has been designed to be both interesting and exciting, with an option to study abroad in Level 4.

Graduates from our Civil and Structural Engineering programmes secure a variety of jobs in organisations ranging from engineering consultancies such as AECOM, Atkins and Jacobs to government agencies including the Office of Public Works and Transport Scotland. Our highly sought after graduates are involved in large-scale global infrastructure projects in energy, transport and water from an early stage, and tend to be promoted quickly to senior positions. This is testament to the practical nature of the curriculum and the respect afforded to Heriot-Watt by employers around the world. Civil Engineering graduates have gone on to manage design and construction projects ranging from urban drainage systems to airports. Structural Engineering graduates have contributed to the design of large or complex structures such as bridges and power stations. Graduates of our Structural Engineering with Architectural Design programme have gone on to design international landmark structures that combine artistic inspiration and engineering innovation (e.g. BBC Scotland’s Headquarters at Pacific Quay).
