Medical Engineering BEng (Hons) or MEng

Course Description

Develop your engineering knowledge and skills, and progress into a career in the fast-growing medical sector. You’ll apply engineering principles to the design and development or improvement of medical devices, such as implants, or treatment methods in order to – ultimately – improve clinical outcomes. You’ll be taught by a dedicated team of research-active professionals who work with medical companies through Knowledge Transfer Partnerships. You’ll benefit first hand from their innovative research and have the opportunity to use our Medical Engineering Research Group's facilities. These include: computational facilities to simulate virtual surgery six-degree-of-freedom joint simulation machine three-dimensional (3D) printing biomechanics testing equipment our start-of-the-art movement analysis laboratory. Our university is the first in the UK, and one of the few in Europe, to offer sophisticated and robust computer simulation and laboratory testing facilities, the kinds that are used by large engineering and medical companies. Throughout your course, you’ll develop theoretical and practical knowledge from a range of engineering, computational simulations, in vitro experiments, medical devices/medical science disciplines. As well as key engineering theories, you’ll gain an understanding of human health, and discover treatment simulation techniques that predict relative performances of implants, surgical techniques and medical devices such as joint contact mechanics. Our strong links with hospitals will give you the opportunity to witness surgical operations and work with surgeons to address clinical problems for your final-year projects. As well as developing crucial problem-solving and critical thinking skills, you’ll gain unique practical laboratory and computer simulation skills, in addition to research experience. Most importantly, you’ll develop an awareness of the professional attitudes and attributes required for embarking on a multidisciplinary, varied and exciting career in healthcare and medical engineering.
